How do you get Dientamoeba Fragilis?

Hi there. Eric Bakker, naturopath from New Zealand back again to talk to you about Dientamoeba Fragilis, a parasite. Let’s have a look at causes. How do you get this infection? Why would you pick up a parasite? It’s not something that you would normally like to get from somebody, but it’s generally something you picked up from somebody – a little bit like an STD. Not a nice present to have, but you can get it. You can also get it often while traveling, in my opinion. This interesting little bug has not so much been found in domestic animals, it’s been found in non-human primates and it’s certainly been found more recently in pigs. Pigs can have large colonies of this bug.

In the first video I did in the series when I spoke about what Dientamoeba Fragilis is, I mentioned that this very interesting little parasite doesn’t really have a cyst stage. It’s got basically more of a mature stage straight up. So it’s not going to live for very long outside of the host, unlike Blastocystis or other parasites that can go into more of a dormant phase. Generally, I think how it will be picked up will be hand-to-hand contact, oral/fecal route or not proper hand washing. This is a big thing that I have spoken about in previous videos. It only takes a few minutes to wash hands. I think this is where one of the biggest transmissions of many different sicknesses come from, even influenza, colds and flus. It’s just from washing the hands.

I remember when I was at medical college; we were studying and I could remember one of the teachers saying, “Look, if you want to prevent disease, one of the easiest ways to do it is just to wash the hands.” He, in fact, went to the sink and showed us how to wash the hands and how long it took to wash the hands properly. It wasn’t just a quick sort of like this you know, it was actually a proper hand washing. Not that I’m very anal when it comes to hand washing, but I’ve certainly made a practice to really look after hygiene. Especially when I go traveling a lot. I go to airports, in taxis and hotels and things like that. When I did a lot of traveling a few years ago, I was very conscious of getting off an airplane and washing the hands, for example. Very important thing to do if you go to a third-world country is to be careful about hygiene.

Also, utensil sharing. Look at different places where you eat. Just keep an eye on your hygiene in general for the next few days and you might be surprised how often you will go somewhere or touch something, and before you know it, the hand goes up to the eye, or to the mouth, and you’re not even thinking about hand washing. This is how bugs get from one place to another.

A common cause of Dientamoeba Fragilis infection is poor hygiene. No one is going to stand there and tell you to put this bug inside your mouth, you’re the one who gets it into your system. It’s basically your responsibility to keep your hygiene first-rate if you want to avoid transmission of many different diseases; not just parasites, but sexually transmitted diseases as well. We all know that. A lot of us don’t know about parasites. Some people actually think that you get it for some unknown reason. Well, you don’t. You get an infection for a specific reason. So you need to be very cautious.

Many parasites in general are unfortunately not taken seriously by the medical profession. It’s amazing how many patients I’ve seen over the years that had one or several parasites that were never investigated properly. That’s what we’re going to talk about coming up very soon in another video. We’re going to talk about tests and diagnosis for Dientamoeba Fragilis. So is there a cause for this bug? It is. It could be from travel, but generally I think it comes from poor hygiene. Thanks for tuning in – catch you in the next video where we’re going to talk about testing.

Feeling of Spaced Out – Can It Be Candida?

Hello there! It’s New Zealand naturopath Eric Bakker. Author of Candida Crusher and the formulator of the Canxida range of products. Thank you for tuning in and thank you to all my subscribers for all your kind comments and for all the questions I keep getting now from many different parts of the world. I’ve got an email here from a lady called Marie Cohen from Hong Kong. Marie wants to know: “Help me Eric, I’m feeling disorientated and spacey while on the MEVY diet.” So Marie got a copy of the Candida Crusher book, and started on our program, and I also read from Marie’s email that she was taking our Canxida range of products. Let’s go into a few of the areas to discuss that with you Marie, because I think other people are going to benefit from this video as well.

I see that the changes you made were quite rapid. You made a lot of changes very quickly. Also, the other thing I was concerned about is the dosage of the products that you took. You were drinking a little bit of alcohol and coffee. I can gauge from the e-mail that you stopped those very quickly. I always recommend people to make change slowly. If you start making changes too quick-you put supplements in, you stop all coffee and alcohol and you immediately start consuming a different kind of diet, you’re going to create a lot of turmoil and upheaval in the body.

It’s going to create a lot of dysregulation with many different systems. You’ll get a bowel change very quick. Your liver will function slightly differently. It’s got to process supplements. It’s got to process different kinds of foods. This is going to alter your energy and your sleep and your mood and many things will be altered. Better idea would be to make change slowly. So, I’m going to recommend for you to go back to what you were doing with the alcohol and coffee, and to have a slow transition over a three to four week period coming off the alcohol and not starting the supplements until you’ve finished those. Taking a supplement as your coming down off alcohol isn’t a good idea. You’re best to wait until you’ve stopped that and then start the supplement, otherwise you’re only going to create a massive detox problem for yourself.

The other thing I’ve noticed is that you’re consuming I don’t think not enough food, so you’re having lots of small tiny meals. You mentioned also that you want to lose weight. Let’s get one thing right. The Candida approach, which is recommend and the eating program is not really meant for weight loss. It’s not a good idea to try and change your diet, clean the Candida up and lose weight all at the same time. It’s too much. It’s like trying to learn five languages at the same time. It’s just not going to happen. Do one thing properly, take your time before you move on to the next. A systematic approach works very well.

The other thing that I’d like you to do is to drink more water because you’re not really drinking enough water either. You’re also asking me if it’s good if you can take ibuprofen here and there for headaches that you’ve been getting from being tired and spaced out. Again, it’s not really a good idea to rely on ibuprofen while you’re taking the anti-fungal product because that can make you quite sick.

You’re also working quite a lot. Your husband’s working, and you’re working, and you’ve got two children, so you’ve got quite a lot on. You need to bear in mind that you’ve got a high stress lifestyle whilst making all these changes. I can see why you’re feeling spacey and disorientated. It’s probably best that you really do this kind of approach if you can cut back on your work for a few weeks, just reduce, because you mentioned yourself employed. If you can cut back and incorporate some of the changes slowly into your diet.

Your exercise pattern seems a little bit too much because you’re doing lots of different kinds of exercise. Cardio exercise, swimming and things like that. That’s not really a good idea either is to do too much exercise and have high stress while making these changes. Gentle is a better idea. Take it easy and slow up on these kinds of things. Many people have this belief that if they exercise hard and cut their diet back that they’re going to lose weight. In fact, it’s not really a good idea to do that at all. Many people don’t lose weight by exercising. Many people don’t lose weight by changing their diet. Watch some of my videos where I talk about metabolism and hormones affecting weight more than anything.

How are we going to clean this mess up, this disorientation? Going back to what you were doing I think is a good idea. Then following the advice I’ve written in the book about very slowly coming off and creating the seven to ten-day cleanse is a good idea for you first to do that bowel cleanse because you didn’t really do that flushing and cleansing. The other approach I’d like you to take is the warm turkey approach where we cut down your alcohol and caffeine consumption very slowly over a three to four-week period. Then we do about a seven to ten-day cleanse.

At that point it’s good to cut your work right back and to relax more. Spend more time with the kids and relax more. Then we go into the Candida Crusher approach where we put you on the MEVY diet. We look at the low allergy cleansing phase to get the leaky gut fixed up, then we look at a reintroduction. That whole process, to be honest, I think you’re looking at about four to six months for yourself. I think you’re going to end up losing weight, having more energy, improving your sleep, getting a good libido back and all those kinds of things. You’ve got hot flushes and fatigue and headaches and you’ve got all these sorts of things. I can really read an element of stress in your e-mail there as well. If you could try that approach, I think you’re going to find a much more satisfactory outcome.

The other thing that you’ve taught yourself in that four to six months is you’ve learned quite a lot of different ways to incorporate good healthy habits into your diet, which are going to take you right through to your 50s and 60s. I like people to slowly develop good habits and maintain those good habits and keep on doing them. This is going to help you to avoid doctor’s visits, pharmaceutical drugs, needless surgery, and thousands of dollars’ worth of treatment.

We had a patient coming in yesterday who had been to 30 doctors and the best hematologist in New Zealand, the best blood specialist. Ten minutes in my room and I discovered this poor man was taking 80 milligrams of a statin drug that was causing serious fatigue and a flu-like syndrome. Ten minutes in my room. I’m not the best hematologist in even my street or anywhere and I’m certainly not 30 doctors, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that medications aren’t the answer to getting well.

I’d like you to lessen your reliance on hormone replacement therapy that you’re currently undergoing. Pharmaceutical medications for headaches and things like that. I think you’re going to do well if you can do that. Keep in touch with me, Marie, and please send me an e-mail for your update. Thanks for your question.

Gas, Bloating or Cramps: Is It Candida?

Greeting! New Zealand naturopath, Eric Bakker. Author of Candida Crusher. Formulator of the Canxida range of products. I have a YouTube question here from a subscriber who just wishes to be called Tania. Tania was asking the question, “Eric, I’m getting crazy gas and bloating after consuming meat. Would it be a yeast infection?”

Tania, if straight up know that you’re getting a problem with a particular kind of food or food group, the first thing you would start doing is probably back right off that food group and maybe even change that food group entirely. With your meat, my question to you would be what kind of meat are you consuming? How much are you consuming? Are you chewing it properly? Are you eating it for breakfast, lunch or dinner? Are you eating it with other kinds of foods? Have you recently increased the amount of meat you’re eating? Have you changed the way that you cook the meat? Have you taken a course of antibiotics prior to eating the meat? Have you been on any medication from your doctor? There’s questions for you. Lots of questions.

Generally, with a consultation, all of those questions are answered and then I can get some sort of an idea or direction on where the primary problem is.

For starters, crazy gases and bloating, a very important thing to know is how long after consumption of meat do these crazy gases and bloating occur? If they occur immediately after eating the meat, we can probably work out two things. One of them is it’s probably got more to do with your stomach or upper digestion. The second interesting thing that a lot of people aren’t aware. When you eat a food and you get crazy bloating or digestive discomfort right away, that can also mean your bowels aren’t functioning properly. I’ve worked out with a lot of patients that when they chew food and swallow it and get pain, it could also be the bowel playing up. Because you will get a stimulation between the chewing and swallowing and bowel function. The bowel will tend to move and try to move its contents or what we call peristalsis and that will be activated with chewing and swallowing automatically, that reflex activation occurs.

If you’re a person who’s blocked up or constipated or not going very regularly to the toilet, you can get a lot of pain and bloating in the upper part of the stomach if the lower part is not functioning properly. Does that make sense? This is something many people don’t talk about. Generally, healthy people will eat a meal and not long after have a bowel motion. If you look at animals, animals usually want to relieve themselves very quick after eating and so do babies and young children. Adults tend to lose that reflex, but I’ve certainly noticed this connection if you’ve got some degree of irritable bowel constipation that can cause bloating and gas.

Bloating. Let’s have a look at bloating. If you’re getting bloating down here, it usually means fermentation in most cases. We call that dysbiosis. Dysbiosis is a problem with how the body is handling food. Fermentation will mean the production of air and gas. That can occur with bad bacteria, lack of beneficial bacteria or different kinds of fungi that can live inside the body.

It’s amazing how many species of yeast I find with stool testing. Incredibly a different array of yeast that can affect a person. But generally, the Candida species are the ones I find linked with the bloating. We’ve got other kinds called geotrichum, trichophyton. These tend to be a different kind of a yeast with more filaments in them and they will create a different kind of sensation rather than the bloating. I also find that it’s more people with the skin kinds of infections or jock itch more so I would with the bloating. Candida Albicans or Candida glabrata, Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis. There are different Candida species that can cause the bloating.

Bloating often goes with gas. If you’ve got lots of flatulence and bloating together would certainly mean you’ve got a lot of fermentation dysbiosis. In that case, it can often occur with a change of diet. If you’re starting to change your diet too rapidly or you’ve consumed alcohol or a large carbohydrate meal the day before or two days prior, you’re going to get bloating and gas. Sometimes even not chewing food properly can give you bloating or gas by allowing the body to struggle with how it breaks that kind of food down. Chewing is extremely important to prevent bloating and gas from occurring in the bottom.

Should you drink water with meals? Yes or no? That’s up to you. The jury is out on that one. Some people say never drink with meals. Others say drink with meals. Personally, I don’t drink any water with meals, but I drink after a meal. I tend to drink a lot of water in the morning when I get up. I find that a good time to drink. I often just drink during the day, especially if I work outside. I come inside and have two glasses of water routinely. It’s up to you. You’ll soon work out if the drinking relieves the bloating or not. Carbohydrate meals, large amounts consumed, especially under a stressful situation can often cause bloating. Parasites can also cause bloating.

With the meat, one trick you could try as I mentioned, reduce the amount you eat. Try a different meat. And the other one you can do is try an enzyme because digestive enzymes really help to break down the meat properly. Check out my product called Canxida Restore. It’s got seven different kinds of enzymes in there and six kinds of probiotics, so that’s going to help bust the meat down more effectively. The probiotic will allow you to recolonize the gut more effectively. That product should help you, too.

Try fish. Try chicken. Move away maybe from beef, lamb or pork. I’m not a big fan of pork or ham. I find those meats a bit hard to digest. I find good quality organic lamb to be a good meat. I will tend to buy the pieces like the leg and then bone them out rather than chops with all the fat in them. I just prefer to eat the muscle meat when it comes to lamb. Otherwise, try fish. Fish generally doesn’t cause any kind of bloating when you eat it unless you’re eating a high fat fish like salmon and you’re eating too much and maybe you’ve got a bit of liver congestion.

Play around. See how you go. And the other one you could do is try eggs. Eggs may not cause any bloating at all. They don’t usually do that. If the gut’s not leaky, you shouldn’t have a problem with egg consumption at all. It’s a great protein to eat. I hope that answers your questions and that you get some benefit from that. Thanks for tuning in and thanks for your question.
