Greetings! Eric Bakker, naturopath from New Zealand. Author of Candida Crusher and formulator of the CanXida range of products. Thanks for checking out my video. Today we’re going to talk a little bit about mental/emotional health and the gut.
Naturopaths like me have known for a long, long time that there’s a connection between what’s in here and stuff happening up in here. A long time. Many years. If fact, if I look back at some of my old books going back even 80-90 years ago, people were talking about the gut/brain connection. Medical science is very slow to catch up on this, although some research now is certainly validating what we’ve thought all along about the gut/brain connection.
I was just looking at a recent study done by a University in Los Angeles. I think it’s UCLA where they were giving people two cups of a probiotic yogurt per day, and they noticed a definite improvement in the mood and cognition of the people who were eating the probiotic yogurt. They put it down to lactobacillus, bifida bacteria, lactococcus, streptococcus, different bugs in the probiotic yogurt. It’s a well-known fact that when the gut becomes disordered, the brain becomes disordered. When you get serious dysbiosis in the gut, you can end up with major anxiety disorder. You can end up with depression. You can end up with confusion/cognitive deficits. Many types of problems can ensue.
Naturopaths have always maintained that good health starts in the gut. I get an incredible amount of emails all the time and comments on YouTube about people wanting to know how to cure this disease or fix this up or what pill can I take to fix this? I keep coming back to the digestive system. If you get that in really good shape, it’s going to have not just a good effect on the physical body, but also the emotional health and the psychological health in general. It’s a very important point.
Interesting what they found is that when people have got different types of bacteria in their body, good or bad, it can have a big influence on how we feel. We know, for example, that people with very high counts of lactobacillus have got a lower tendency of feeling depressed or anxious than people with really low counts.
We even know now that another study has found out recently that lactobacillus can actually help to increase the amount of GABA produced in digestive system. GABA is a major hormone that the body uses to allay anxiety. Most of it is, in fact, made in the small intestine we know now like 80-90 percent is made. Drugs like diazepam target GABA receptors, but what a dumb idea. What a stupid idea. If you can build up your good bacteria and help to increase the amount of hormone available to the brain, doesn’t that make a lot of sense? Makes a lot of sense to me.
The gut is very important for many different reasons. Many people have always thought it was just the main seat for digestion and absorption, but now we know it plays a big role in mental and emotional health. I think well into the future when people look at this video, hopefully if it’s still up on YouTube, people will say, “See that guy there? Hundred years ago this guy was talking about gut brain and we’re still digging around with drugs and surgery on people. We’re still putting people in psychiatric units. We’re still allowing people to have diet cola drinks and then give them anxiety drugs and not give a hoot what they eat or drink and then treat them with pharmaceutical drugs when they feel like crap. We’re still doing it.” They may be saying that in 50 or a 100 years from now. Maybe they won’t. Maybe they’ll say, “Hang on, that guy there in that silly little black jersey he’s wearing! He was right. We’ve just found out all along that these drugs cause a lot of problems with people and we should be focusing on the digestive health of people.”
Beneficial bacteria also help to modulate the immune system because we know that the immune system has a big effect on feelings/emotions and how we think, how we feel. The cognitive parts. People with poor immune function or high inflammatory rates tend to have white blood cells that create more chemicals than the average person called cytokines. Cytokines are chemicals produced to deal with problems in the body. The beneficial bacteria may allay those cytokines. You can maybe liken cytokines a bit like tear gas. You get the good guys and the bad guys. You get people spraying tear gas around, but then you got the clever people who take those gas masks with them and they don’t get affected by tear gas. That’s what the beneficial bacteria do. They tend to down regulate the effect of the tear gas on the body, on the cytokines. They stop the bad response. Again, a really important reason why you want to have lots of good beneficial bacteria in your digestive system.
These are just a couple of the hundreds of reasons why you want them. Many of the stool test reports I’ve been reading the last several months show me that a lot of people have got a very low level of beneficial bacteria. They’re all worried about this Candida problem. “I’ve got Candida, help me! The ship’s sinking I’m going down! I’m sick. I need to kill this thing.” We get the stool tests results back and what do we find? No beneficial bacteria or very low levels. It may be down to one when it should be four. These are big issues that you really want to face. You may not have a Candida problem, you may have a lack of beneficial bacteria, which is very common today.
This is why I created my CanXida Restore product. I picked the best strains of lactobacillus and bifida bacteria. I put them in a very special capsule called capsule gel, which will not open up in the stomach. It gets into the small intestine where you want to have it. Takes a few hours for the capsule to open up, and that’s exactly where you want the bacteria to be. Take some probiotics because they’re certainly going to help you if you suffer from anxiety or low moods or depression. Even if you suffer from confusion it’s certainly worth it. Brain fog – take probiotics. Thanks for tuning in. Don’t forget to click on the link if you haven’t got my report. Thank you very much.
Greetings, Greetings! It’s naturopath Eric Bakker from New Zealand. Author of Candida Crusher and formulator of the Canxida range of products. Thanks again for checking out this video in the detox series. I hope you’ve been looking at some of these videos, which I previously completed and uploaded. We did one a few days ago on liver cleansing/detoxification, and the one that followed that was the gallbladder flush.
Now we’re going to talk about the “Royal Flush.” Who knows what the royal flush is? We’re not talking about the poker hand royal flush. A couple of my patients do online poker, which is quite interesting, so I looked up what royal flush is. Apparently, it’s ace, king, queen, jack and ten all in one hand. What an amazing hand of cards to have. The royal flush is the king in poker. It trumps everyone and everything.
The kidney flush out-trumps everything when it comes to detox. The amazing thing is nobody talks about this stuff. I had a look on YouTube and I hardly found anything at all on kidney detoxification/cleansing. I found a couple of wacky people saying things like you have to drink 20/30 glasses of water a day, and many people say you need to drink 10 to 12 glasses a day, and other people tell you that you need to drink all these other kinds of beverages. That was about the extent of kidney cleansing that I saw.
I can tell you kidney cleansing is amazingly important, and it’s often entirely overlooked. So that’s what we’re going to talk about today. The “Royal Flush.” The kidney flush. This is perfect to do once per year. A kidney cleanse. The kidneys play an incredibly important role in keeping your body healthy. If they didn’t function well for one or two days, you would be dead. You would be gone really quick because you’d have all these toxins building up in your blood really fast and you wouldn’t like that.
Did you know that the kidneys filter a staggering 200 plus liters of blood per day? I think that equates to 400 pints, 200 liters, about 400 pints of blood. They produce an incredible four pints of waste every day, about two to two and a half liters of waste. They’re always filtering and blood, and they’re always cleaning the body. Keeping you clean. They’re trying to get rid of all the crap that you keep putting into your body all the time. All the beer, all the chocolate, all the wine. All of those things that we enjoy to eat here have to come out somewhere down there.
A lot of the stuff that we eat and breathe and put on our skin and we’re in touch with in our environment all gets into our bloodstream. Have you ever wondered what happens to that hand cream that you put on your hands and it disappears really quick? Where do you think it goes? It goes into your blood. All those chemicals in there that you can’t pronounce the names of – the kidneys have to filter all that out.
What about the air that you breathe? You’re walking down New York City and a taxi blows all this black smoke in your face. A lot of my patients from London and the UK have told me they go back to their room later in the day, they blow their nose and it’s all black from soot. It goes into the lungs, into the bloodstream, kidneys filter it out. The liver and the kidneys are the two main cleansers or detoxifiers. It’s very important.
Try and understand it’s a little bit like your car. Every time you get your oil or oil filter changed or every second time you need to get an oil filter change. The oil filter in your situation would be the kidneys and the liver. You can’t rip the kidney out and throw it and put a new one in in a hurry, it’s not that easy to do, but you can cleanse the kidney. No medical doctor talks about detox. Not many naturopaths I’ve ever heard talk about kidney detoxification. In fact, I’ve never heard any who talk about it, which is really crazy to me. All the focus is on bowel cleansing and liver detox, but there’s never any mention on kidney, and that’s what we’re going to do today.
What do the kidneys do? The kidneys perform a vital role in the body on keeping the electrolytes balanced. When you eat salt, for example, and it gets broken down into sodium and chloride, it’s very important for some system in the body to help regulate this balance. The kidneys do that. The kidneys also create multiple hormones. They create one called erythropoietin, which is responsible for red blood cell production, for example. They create other hormones like angiotensin 1 and 2 that help to regulate blood pressure. Without kidneys, you’d be feeling pretty crappy on your feet.
What are some of the signs and symptoms of kidneys gone wrong? Headaches, high blood pressure, nausea, itchy skin is a common one, fatigue, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Feeling wasted and terrible is a common one, too. Just feeling like crap. Where are the kidneys? They’re actually in your back. It’s hard for me to point them out because I’m on YouTube, but you’re going to find them about here somewhere. In normal peoples’ bodies that’s where they are. Some people have got one kidney, some people have got three kidneys. Quite rare, but it has occurred.
The kidney, or the renal gland, has the adrenal glands sitting on top of them. Lots of people I’ve seen over the years have complained about a sore lower back, when it fact they had a very small amount of dull pain emanating from the kidney region. You could sometimes feel a bit of dull pain coming from the lower back region and it could well be kidney.
I had a chiropractor bring me his wife a few years ago as a patient complaining that he couldn’t fix her back up no matter how much he adjusted it. When I did some iridology (looked at the eyes) and I asked a bunch of questions, it was quite evident that the right kidney was pretty sick, which needed a lot of cleaning up. Of course, she thought she had lumbar pain, when it fact she had kidney problem. Bear that in mind. Maybe it’s not your chiropractor, maybe it’s your kidney.
We didn’t really go into all of the roles that the kidney plays, but suffice it to say, there are many different roles that the kidney plays in the body, but the big one is the filtration system. It keeps the blood nice and clean. Do you want clean blood or do you want dirty blood? It’s your call. It really depends on the kind of foods that you eat.
It’s pretty obvious the most important thing to say up front is the consumption of fresh and clean water. It’s obvious. You’re not going to be able to detox on Budweiser beer. I once told a male patient he had to drink more, and his wife ended up sending me an email later saying, “He’s drinking more beer! You told him to drink more.” How crazy is that? Then I realized you have to tell people to drink more WATER. If you tell them to drink more, some males could see that as a reason to drink twice as much beer. Water is not beer. We’re talking pure clean water, preferably filtered water.
I’m not a fan at all of reverse osmosis water. This is basically water that’s flat. It’s got no oxygen in it – it’s dead. It’s not really a good idea. I’m sorry, I’m talking about distilled water. I’m not a fan of distilled water. I think that distillation fad hopefully is behind us now. Distilled water is good for laboratory use, and also for putting in batteries. Although, you can’t really buy car batteries anymore to put water in there, you just dump them. Don’t drink distilled water, it’s not a good idea to drink water that’s got no oxygen in it. You don’t find that naturally. In nature, there is no water with all the oxygen taken out.
So, reverse osmosis water I think is quite a good one. There are lot of different filtration systems you can look at that take fluoride out of the water, chlorine, pesticides, heavy metals and junk like that. I’ve got quite a nice filtration system in my kitchen. I recommend to definitely to do that, especially if you live in a big city. It’s also known that in places like New York, there’s over a 100 different pharmaceutical drugs in the tap water. Every time you have a glass of water – oops! A bit of birth control pill, a bit of Prozac, bit of anti-psychotic medication. Why go to the doctor, when you can have a glass of water with 15 different drugs in it? Anyway, let’s get into this cleansing.
Remember, if you don’t regularly look after the organs that filter the body, you’re going to be in a position, as you get older, for the kidney function to decline more markedly because it’s containing a lot more junk in it. Every year, the kidney function (especially my age, like 50 plus) is going to decline between 1 to 3 percent per year. It’s going to go down, down, down. That’s just by default. Young people have got very good kidneys. Strong kidneys. Older people have weak kidneys. It’s called getting old. Join the club.
How do we cleanse the kidney? What are ways to do a kidney detox? Well, you can keep the kidneys very clean by preferably keeping a lot of junk out of your diet. We’ve spoken about that in numerous videos, but let’s look at some of the key things that the kidney doesn’t like. Some of the key things it doesn’t like is a lot of caffeine, alcohol, and chocolate. That’s right, chocolate. Now you might think chocolate is a really healthy food, but it’s pretty darn hard on the kidneys.
Proteins are very hard on kidney function. This is where the Paleo diet seems crazy to me. They tell you to eat meat three times per day, or lots of eggs, lots of meat, and cut out all the carbs. “Eat a lot of meat, you’ll get healthy.” What a load of crap. It’s not true. The kidney foundation in the US say especially when you’re vulnerable or older, you don’t want to consume any more than about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight. Other people say you need to eat between 1 to 2 grams if you want to maintain muscle mass. Take it from me. Keep your red meat consumption right down when you get beyond 50. Red meat is really tough on the kidney, and also creates a lot of creatinine and urea, uric acid. Different wastes that your kidneys have to filter out.
Meats are tough on kidney, but all proteins are tough on kidneys. The vegans shouldn’t tell me, “You can eat lots of beans! Tons of beans and lots of this and lots of that.” Protein is protein. All protein is tougher, but protein in general you need to be cautious of. When you get older, you don’t need a lot of protein, unless you’re digging ditches all day and doing a huge amount of physical labor, which a 75-year-old shouldn’t really be doing in my opinion. He should be sweeping paths or going on Facebook and stuff like that, but not lots of hard physical work. Younger people have got healthier kidneys and can eat more protein and physically work harder. But as you get older, you should be using your brain and not your brawn.
Let’s get into this kidney cleansing. Let’s look at a couple of steps we can talk about for keeping the kidney clean. We talked about the red meat, we talked about caffeine, we talked about alcohol, we talked about chocolate. Those are all foods very tough on kidney function. Water consumption we mentioned. I think it’s important to drink water when you get up, before meals, during the day. Eight to ten or twelve glasses in my mind is not necessary at all. Nobody I know drink eight to ten glasses a day. You’d have to be crazy to walk around drinking all day and peeing and peeing all day. It’s not natural to drink 10 to 12 glasses a day. People who tell you that you must drink eight glasses every single day. We’ve got enough bloody limits set upon us already. Speed limits, this limit and this limit. It’s up to you to decide how much water that you want to drink, but I would say a reasonable amount is anywhere between three/four/five glasses per day. It’s really nice if you can drink six glasses per day, but you don’t need to be walking around with one of those drink bottles everywhere you go during the working day.
Check out my video on “Stop Worrying About Health.” I know some people who would go nowhere without a water bottle. They go to the bathroom with a water bottle. Having a pee, they’re drinking water. They’re drinking water watching TV, they’re drinking water when they’re on Facebook, they’re drinking water when they’re in bed. You don’t need to do this kind of crap. This is being anal about water. It’s ridiculous. You need to drink when you’re thirsty. If you’re also like me and drink herbal teas or green tea, that also factors as water. You’re eating a lot of vegetables like steamed vegetables and salads, that also is water. You don’t need to be drinking every three minutes. “An hour’s gone by and I haven’t had a glass of water, I better drink another glass.” Don’t do that. You don’t need that much water.
Keep an eye on the urine. If it’s coming back pretty clear without too much smell, you’re pretty well hydrated. Sometimes if you haven’t been drinking water for a while, you can step your water intake up and see how you feel. You may notice a marked improvement just on the extra two glasses per day. I often tell patients it’s like when you walk into the garden in summer. A very observant gardener will walk into a garden and have a look at the foliage, the leaves on plants and trees and things like that. They can actually see by the angle of the leaves how well hydrated the plants are. Some people who don’t like gardens are not observant at all. They’re also not observant about their own hydration.
The interesting thing is, when you water the garden, you quickly notice how all the leaves will start coming back up again and the plants are well-hydrated. These are the plants that grow beautifully. There’s no such thing as a green thumb in my opinion. The people who haven’t got green thumbs are the lazy people who don’t water their garden. “Oh my God, my plant’s dying. What’s happening? I can’t get this garden happening. What the hell’s happening?” Maybe you should water the garden. Maybe you should take a drink occasionally because you might feel better, too.
I’ve had some patients who’ve told me they never drink water, they only drink coffee or tea. That’s pretty bad. Those are the people who need to get a kidney function test done where we can look at the creatinine levels, and the glomerular filtration. There’s two things you want to look at: Creatinine and GFR. Creatinine is a waste product. The muscles actually create wastes. It’s a bit like your car when you drive your car, you put gas in the tank. You drive it and exhaust comes out the tailpipe. The exhausts in your muscles are the creatinine. They build up and the exhaust’s got to go somewhere. It doesn’t come out your tailpipe, it’s got to come out the urine, because the kidneys filter this stuff. Kidneys filter the blood, and they help to remove this. Creatinine clearance is the ability for the body to clear creatinine from the bloodstream.
If you start noticing this is becoming compromised, this is when you need to start drinking more water before it’s too late. Glomerular filtration is different. Glomeruli are tiny little capsules in the kidney. Try and understand that your kidney is very complicated in how it works, but a simple way to explain it to you is a whole bunch of colanders or strainers on top of each other. Those things that you put spaghetti in when you rinse it out under the tap and you drain the water out. Think of your kidneys as having thousands of these colanders on top of each other and stuff coming in there, and junk coming out of the bottom that you want to discard.
If there’s a problem with these glomeruli, these capsules, if they’re not working properly, the filtration rate will be affected and compromised. You’ll be holding junk back in the body that you want to pass out. The GFR relates more to the mechanics and how healthy the kidney is. Creatinine clearance relates more to how effective the kidneys are at clearing a particular kind of toxin. Meat also helps to produce a significant amount of waste in the body. The creatinine clearance will give you an idea on that, too. That particular pathway. Every year on your birthday get a liver function test and a kidney function test by the doctor. That’s your birthday present from me. Make sure you do it.
Drink lots of water, we talked about that. Here’s a nice thing you can do: eat more parsley. Parsley has got a lot of potassium in it. It’s a really nice way to initiate urine coming from the body, and it’s a great way to cleanse the kidneys. Put lots of fresh parsley in your salads. Parsley roots have been historically used for hundreds of years for kidney cleaning. You grow parsley because you can’t actually buy the roots, and in the second year you harvest the roots. They’re quite thick. They almost look like small carrots. You wash them properly, cut the top off and put it in the salad, and then what you do is you chop that up, and you can make a tea out of it.
The roots are very powerful. You can chop some root up or the whole plant with the leaves, add a pint of water to a pot, a stainless pot, (600 mil) and chuck a handful of parsley and maybe some roots for more effectiveness in there, and simmer with the lid on for four minutes. When cool, drink half a cup, and keep the remainder in a glass container in the refrigerator.
Drink 125 mils, or half a cup twice daily for seven to ten days. This is a nice kidney cleanse. Better results, as I mentioned in my book, are obtained when you add the carefully cleaned roots of a parsley plant that’s two years old.
Take a good probiotic capsule three times daily with meals to help repopulate urinary and digestive tract with beneficial bacteria. There’s definitely a link with taking a probiotic with the bacteria in the intestinal tract and the kidney. Believe it or not, there’s actually bacteria that live in the kidney system as well. A good probiotic. Check out my Canxida Restore product. It’s got some enzymes in it and some very good probiotics to help you achieve this end.
In addition, during this kidney cleansing week, drink a glass of apple juice every day. Certified organic or juice your own. Green apples, excellent. Also nice for putting malic acid in the body. Muscles like malic acid – gives them a bit of energy/pep. Gallbladder likes malic acid. It helps to clean the liver and it also cleans the kidney.
Eat more of the following kidney friendly foods, especially in this particular week. This is great to do in summer time. After you’ve done your liver cleanse and gallbladder flush, you do the kidney royal flush. Watermelon contains a lot of different flavonoids and compounds that help to initiate kidney cleansing. Celery is superb for cleaning the kidney. Celery, watermelon, red bell peppers, cabbage, cauliflower, garlic, onions, green apples, cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cherries, red grapes, egg whites and fresh fish. If you’ve got a yeast infection, omit the grapes, of course.
Cranberries and blueberries or any berries are very good for kidney cleansing. They contain different kinds of organic compounds that convert to this stuff called hippuric acid. Hippuric acid is a really good scrubber or cleaner of uric acid and urate from the body. Uric acid is like the deposits that affect the kidney. Uric acid’s important to clean from the body for many different reasons. It can make you quite sick and toxic. It’s also known to be bad for people with arthritis, especially gout.
When kidney cleansing, reduce these things: Red meat, white flour, sugar, which you shouldn’t be having anyway, rich foods like gravies and stuff like that, junk foods, peanuts, spinach (because it’s got oxalic acid in it, which can inhibit kidney cleansing). If you’re not cleansing, it’s okay to eat spinach here and there. I wouldn’t eat spinach every day. There’s a difference between Swiss Chard and real English spinach. The Swiss Chard can be a little bit harder on kidney function if you’ve got a compromised GFR or a poor creatinine clearance. I’ve had patients over the years with a huge amount of arthritis and pain in their body that were eating lots of amounts of Swiss Chard, so be careful of Swiss Chard.
I think that’s just about it with the kidney cleansing. We talked about the protein, we talked about the berries. Another tip for you is barley water. I remember reading about this some time ago. So barley is a little bit like corn silk. It’s a demulcent. It’s very soothing and cleansing on the kidney. Just get a small handful of barley, throw it in about a cup of water, and leave it overnight. Then in the morning, strain it and drink that water. It has a really good effect on increasing the creatinine clearance. That’s a good tip for you.
Try and do all this stuff over a seven-day period, once per year. It’s going to really help to build your health up. If you do it after your birthday, for example, at least once a year on a regular basis, I think you’ll notice that you’ll hold more stability if you’ve got poor kidney function, especially if your glomerular filtration rate is compromised and your creatinine clearance is compromised. You’ll be able to actually put that on a slow hold.
Clever thing to do that I’ve told many patients: when you do blood tests at least once a year, put stuff that’s flagged by the doctor on a spreadsheet and track it each year to see if it’s going up or down. Same with your business. You’ve got to track money coming in and out. Clever people do that. I hope that was some good information for you on kidney.
Remember: water, reduce protein intake, especially red meat, eggs and red meat can be hard on kidney function, increase foods with a high water content that are good for kidney cleansing like watermelon and celery, berries are very good. Chocolate, caffeine, alcohol kick the kidney in the backsides so watch out for those. Increase your water intake, but don’t be anal. “Whoops, I haven’t had a glass of water in an hour, better drink a glass.” Don’t be like that.

Greetings! Eric Bakker, naturopath from New Zealand. Thanks for checking out my video. I’ve been asked by numerous people in the past several months if I could do a video and talk about liver detoxification. How to do a proper liver detox. What are the steps you can do? What are the foods you need to avoid? What are the foods you need to include?
Well, as usual, I spent a good hour on YouTube checking out videos by all kinds of people, ranging from armchair experts up to really smart people. I found some very good comments from lots of different people. I found some not so good comments and I found some crazy comments from some weird people. Remember, YouTube’s full of all kinds of different people with many different experiences.
Some people actually recommend that you drink alcohol in small amounts for liver detoxification, would you believe it or not. Other people recommend you keep right away from it. Some people recommend not to do a liver detox and take supplements because they could make you sick. There’s all sorts of comments, so you need to be very careful with the kind of advice you’re going to take onboard. This is going to be a pretty common sense kind of video with a bit of technical information thrown in.
One video I’ve just viewed which talked about liver detoxification in five steps has had nearly 700,000 views. It fails to mention one major thing which is going to kill any kind of liver detox, and that’s drinking alcohol. It’s amazing how many people I see who think they can drink even small amounts and still think they can do a liver detox. Obviously, we can’t have any kind of alcohol if we’re serious about liver cleansing. It’s one of the number one toxins for the liver, so we need to avoid that if we’re really serious about it.
First, let’s look at some signs and symptoms at what goes on if your liver is not very happy. I’ve made a few points here on paper and I’ll read a few out to you. Coated tongue, bad breath, red palms and soles, flushing or sweating, flushed facial appearance, yellowy eyes, mild headaches, waking up with this sort of dull, sort of low grade hungover kind of feeling.
Remember the last time you were hungover? Maybe you don’t drink alcohol, but if you ever have had alcohol and maybe a tiny little bit too much, you’ll know all about what a hangover is. You don’t have to be vomiting to have a hangover. You could wake up with a very mild, dull achy feeling in the head. That’s how some people feel all the time with a liver that’s toxic.
Itchy eyes can be a sign of problems with the liver. Swollen eyes or problems around the eyes. Dark circles under the eyes can be liver or kidney. Brownish spots or blemishes on the skin, we call them liver spots. Especially if a woman has a lot of spots on her hand and different parts of her body, it could also mean that she’s not detoxifying estrogen or other hormones properly. What about digestive problems? Gallstones, queasiness, nausea, burping, sour stuff coming up, burping up bitter stuff from inside, intolerance to fatty foods, drinking one glass of wine and feeling like you’ve been wacked over the head, drinking one beer and thinking you’ve drunk a keg of beer.
An inappropriate reaction to alcohol can be a very clear sign of a liver problem. Same with fats. Smelling fats or eating fatty foods can make you sick. Reflux, indigestion, abdominal bloating, constipation, IBS. Constipation’s a very common sign a liver that’s in dire need. A lot of these things I’ve mentioned may make you think you’ve got a parasite problem or a Candida problem or IBS, when in fact it could be a liver problem. Very important point for you to know that.
What about nervous system problems? Well, we know that people with what I call “emotional constipation,” people who get frustrated, very angry all the time and get really peeved off – those people can have liver problems. People with liver problems can get angry, and angry people, for example, can get liver problems. Look what alcohol does to people. It turns them into instant idiots. A lot of people who drink alcohol go out and do stupid things. The police spend every Friday and Saturday night cleaning up the streets because there are a lot of sick people out there who drink and start punching other people up.
Poor concentration, foggy brain, overheating, mood swings as well, recurring headaches, especially if they are associated with nausea. What about immune dysfunction? More signs and symptoms of a liver in need of attention because your liver is one of your big primary immune organs. It’s got cells in it called Kupffer cells. They’re involved also in keeping the body having a very powerful immune response. When the liver is sick or not well, it can also mean allergies, sinus, hay fever, dermatitis, hives. Many different skin problems can come as a result of a sick liver.
Many different types of skin rashes and inflammations. Chemical and food sensitivities. MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity). Autoimmune diseases nearly always have some link with a liver problem. Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia often times is a liver dysfunction. Recurrent viral bacterial and parasitic infections. Liver congestion. Sick liver. Poor detoxification pathways. All very common with liver problems.
Blood sugar problems. What about hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar? Liver problem. Craving for sugar? Liver problem. Look at people who’ve got Type-2 diabetes or mature onset. They often have liver issues. They have high cholesterol. They can’t metabolize fat properly. They have sugar cravings. They have a lot of signs and symptoms of liver dysfunction. Hormonal imbalances – we spoke about that briefly, particularly with women with the brown spots. Menopausal symptoms like hot flashes can often involve the liver as well.
Now you can see that there’s a whole bunch of stuff that can happen with liver dysfunction. We’re going to talk now about how to cleanse the liver. I’m not going to talk about these are the five steps because there are a lot more than that. Needless to say, it’s very important for you to keep your liver in very good shape. It is one of your largest organs. It’s the biggest organ in the body in terms of its ability to burn fat and clear toxins from the body. It is also a metabolic regulator. It warms the body up and cools it down. It has over 350 to 400 different chemical actions in the body.
There are two main pathways how the liver works. Phase one and phase two. In fact, I might just grab this chart here. I often show patients this chart. You can see my liver detoxification chart here. Let’s see if I can just stand here and walk you through a few things. Here you can clearly see phase one: toxins coming into the body. This phase works by virtue of a bunch of things called P450 enzymes. Then we have phase two: the conjugation. Then we have this stuff here in the middle.
I can’t hold that picture up for the screen and talk to you about it, so I’m going to talk you through this a little bit.
Doctors know phase one quite well. How do they know phase one? Well, look at this drug guide here. This is a New Zealand drug guide, but if you’re in America or any other country, your doctor will have this drug guide. This drug guide has got over 1,600 drugs in it. Now, what do you see at the top there? You see “drug interactions related to liver enzyme activity.” Here, we can clearly see pages and pages of drugs here. At the top you can see weird things like 2C9 and 2A6 and stuff like that. These are different P450 enzymes. There’s a couple of hundred of them.
Enzymes have a specific affinity for breaking certain toxins down. Drugs are hard on the liver. In fact, when the liver enzymes break these drugs down, they become more toxic, and then they create what we call free radicals, or actually damage to the body. That’s the intermediate pathway I showed you. Toxins come in (let’s just say drugs, but it could be hormones, pesticides, all sorts of junk in your diet, hydrogenated fats, aspartame) the P250 enzymes have to break those toxins down.
They become more toxic through that breakdown. They go into intermediate phase, and then this is why it’s important to have antioxidants to stop oxidative stress. Vitamins A, C, E, Selenium, Zinc. Many other kinds of elements there.
These things actually help to protect the liver. Glutathione, which we find in milk thistle. Very important herb. It’s a very important we call tripeptide. Three amino acids make up this compound that stops damage to the liver. The liver is full of glutathione. Then these toxins go from this middle pathway into the second phase called conjugation. There are different types of conjugation pathways. Now the toxins get broken down further into either pee or poo or it comes out through your breath. Metabolically, there are different ways you can eliminate toxins; through your skin, for example.
The stool and the urine are the two primary routes that the liver has to dump garbage out of the body. Now that you know that, it’s important that you pee properly and you poo properly. Constipated people should not do a liver detox. If you can’t poop every day and your bowel is blocked up; if you’re sitting there on the toilet in the morning and you’re trying to have a go and it’s not happening, or little bits are coming out and you’ve got to come back later on (what I call ineffectual urging). If you’ve got a particularly bad case of constipation or a history of it, you need to do a bowel cleanse or purge before you even think about doing a liver detox.
This is what was missing on a lot of videos I saw. They never talked about that. If you’ve got a problem with your plumbing – let’s just say you’re trying to wash the dishes, but when you let the water down, the drain’s blocked. It’s not a really a good idea to fill up the sink right up to the top because the water’s not going to be able to go out. If you’ve got toxic residues on your plates and cups you’re trying to get rid of and the drain’s not working, you’re pretty well stuffed. So what do you do? You’ve got to clear the drain pipe first. Your drain pipe is your bowel. The bowel has to be clean.
If you look at my Candida Crusher book, also in some of the videos, I talk about a bowel purge. It’s very important to do a bowel purge before you even consider liver detox. Unless you’re a really healthy person and have got a really good gut like I have, don’t even think about doing a liver detoxification without having a clean bowel. It’s a silly idea. If you liberate a lot of toxins from the liver and they’re not going to be excreted properly, you’re going to take them up all over again. So, rule number one: bowel purge first. You can use magnesium for this, different types of products like vitamin C powder. That’s an important concept I want you to really remember. The bowel has to be clean before you even consider it.
If you’re going to consider the liver cleanse, I want you to really consider changing the way you eat for several weeks leading into the liver detoxification. There’s no point like having KFC every day or McDonald’s for breakfast three times a week. Diet coke, pizzas every night, smoking 10 cigarettes a day and having three or four cans of beer and then “I’m going to go on a liver detox right now! I need to get that liver clean because I’m feeling like crap.”
What’s going to happen if you throw your body straight away into a detox when you’ve been living like crap is you’re going to feel like crap. You’re going to be vomiting, diarrhea, headaches. Sick for days, even weeks. I’ve seen this with many people. A good point is to lead in. This is what I call a “warm turkey” approach. You don’t go cold turkey. You don’t just stop all your beer and your pizzas overnight. You do this way back.
What if you’re already eating an amazing diet? Your bowel is working beautifully. Then it may be time for you to consider a liver detoxification. There are many different ways you can do a liver detox. I like herbal detoxifications. I like using specific formulas from different companies that include specific kinds of nutrients. If we look at my chart again here, you can actually see the co-factors that help each phase. Let’s have a look here. You can actually see and find these charts on the internet. Here for example different things that expedite phase one. You’ll see a lot of B vitamins here, for example. In phase two here, we’re looking at proteins in particular – methionine, cysteine, choline, different kinds of elements.
How do you really clean the liver up? Well, one website I saw said you just need three herbs: milk thistle, turmeric, and dandelion. Well, that’s pretty simplistic. I think you need a little bit more than that. I like people to drink a liver tea. Go to your health food shop and buy a good quality liver tea. You can drink one or two cups a day. That’s a smart move. Look at eating a cleaner diet leading into the liver cleanse. When you do the liver cleanse, we’re looking at one, two or three weeks of quite intensive dietary work.
The best time to do the liver cleanse is spring going into summer. What is it now? It is May, so in the States now – I think you guys are in spring or going into summer. Now’s a perfect time to do a detoxification. First, get that bowel working. Don’t forget. Consume foods that actually help to clean the liver. We’re talking sprouts, apple cider vinegar, sour foods, bitter foods, beet roots, artichokes, capers, olives, rocket and endive, lettuce, chicory, lemon juice, lime juice, grapefruit juice. Be careful with grapefruit juice if you’re taking pharmaceutical drugs. If you’re taking different kinds of heart pills or brain pills because grapefruit contains a flavonoid called Naringenin. Naringenin will really screw up one of your P450 enzymes. It can actually upregulate that and make you detoxify much faster. Grapefruit juice is probably out if you’re taking a pharmaceutical drug.
There’s no reason why you can’t have lemon juice and lime juice. These are very good adjuncts as part of your liver cleanse. A good quality cider vinegar – nice and bitter. Helps to secrete bile. These are good things also if you’ve got a sluggish bowel. I like a formula called Swedish Bitters. Go to google: Swedish Bitters. Try and get the original one. Very, very good liver detoxification will occur with Swedish Bitters. You take one teaspoon per day and build up to one teaspoon three to four times per day before meals. Very good ability to work on phase one and phase two. Good ability to help the body dump and release toxic bile. Wonderful product to use for about a month.
That’s got to give you a little bit of an idea on liver cleansing. I did see a video that made a good recommendation that I never saw other videos do, is to talk about actually eating liver. In the old days, doctors talked a lot about glandular therapy. Let me show you something interesting. “Practical Endocrinology.” Doctor Henry Harrower. Produced by the Royal Lee Foundation. The guy who actually started Standard Process. This book was written in 1932. Henry Harrower was one of the founders of the Endocrine Association. He was right there at the beginning. That book I just showed you is 700 pages. It’s predominantly about glandular therapy. Animal glands. Before the Endocrine Association got into drugs, doctors used glands to help people out. Heart, spleen, liver, lung, adrenal, kidney. All these body parts of animals are actually used for the patient to build their body part up.
Eating liver is very powerful for your liver. If you look at Gerson Therapy in Mexico now, Dr. Gerson recommended raw calf’s liver. Very powerful, high glutathione content containing product for cancer therapy. Chicken liver, very good. Helps to build your liver up. What Harrower found through Swiss and German research, it didn’t matter if a cow, for example, consumed a frog’s liver, it still had an incredible affinity on the other animal’s liver. You can even cross species with benefit.
Glandular therapy has been very maligned. Many people don’t eat things like liver or lung or spleen anymore. But right up until recently, they did. I believe that people had much more powerful abilities to have strong organs than they do today because of this very reason. If you don’t want to eat things like cow’s liver organic, non-GMO, then you can look at supplements from certified, clean animals. If you don’t want to do that if you’re a vegan or vegetarian, that’s fine. You don’t have to eat these body parts at all. I’m just saying it is a powerful way for you to get your liver restored and in top shape by doing so.
Other videos I’ve seen talk more about the emotional detox. It’s important for you to understand frustration and anger make your liver quite sick. People that are very stressed and angry can have a very sick liver. The Chinese have attached emotion to each organ. With the Kidneys it’s fear. With the Liver it’s anger. With the Lungs it’s sorrow and grief. With the Heart it’s loss of love or the shin, the loss of spirit. Being very angry and resentful and hateful of certain people in your life can give you a very sick liver. Probably another reason why you drink or take drugs, which again toxify the liver.
We mentioned the herbs – I like Swedish Bitters, it’s a formula that’s been tried and tested for over a 100 years. Instead of going off and buying milk thistle, dandelion, turmeric, dipluran, schizandra and lots of different kinds of herbs and playing around. Unless you’re an herbalist like me, I wouldn’t recommend you go there. Milk thistle is a tea, but Swedish Bitters – good product. Should you eat meat? It’s up to you. I don’t think people have a problem with meat with detoxification at all. In fact, phase two needs proteins and amino acids to detoxify properly.
You can follow a system, which you may see on YouTube, but you don’t need to do any of this with liver detox. Remember: spring and summer, fresh foods, salads, sprouts, foods we spoke about, fresh produce, fresh herbs. Eggs are fine as part of a detox as far as I’m concerned. You don’t need to starve your body to do that. But it does pay for you to cut out all the crap out of the diet. Processed foods, hydrogenated fats, which you’ll find in cookies and cakes and biscuits and things like that. Another thing we didn’t talk about was chocolate. You cannot detoxify the liver in my opinion with cocoa or chocolate. It’s not going to happen.
Some of the core things to keep away from for a few weeks is alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, pharmaceutical medications. All non-essential drugs must be stopped. They’re very toxic to the liver. Pesticides, sprays in the garden, glyphosate in the garden, those sorts of things. Personal care products, go for the organic natural ones. If you can, take a couple of weeks out from work and do the detoxification properly. Do the bowel purge, take the herbs, eat the food, maybe have some saunas or some sweating, which is an extremely powerful adjunct, drinking lots of fresh water, lemon juice, cider vinegar, cultured and fermented foods. They’re very bitter and create a good lactic environment for beneficial bacteria to grow.
Don’t forget to do a bit of a cleansing approach. Maybe look at my Canxida Remove product to clean up any bugs you might have, parasites, bacteria, fungi, get rid of them. Look at the Canxida Restore – enzymes and probiotics. Get that gut working better, the pancreas activated. Put the good bacteria where you want them to go and crowd out the bad guys. All perfect parts of liver detoxification.
