Why Diet Alone Will Not Treat Sibo Infection

Hi, there. It’s Eric Bakker, naturopath from New Zealand. I’m the author of Candida Crusher and I’m the formulator of the Canxida range of supplements. Thanks for checking out my video. Today we’re going to talk about five different reasons why diet is totally insufficient to treat SIBO.

I spent a bit of time of Facebook. Not that I spend a lot of time on Facebook, but I sometimes put pictures of my parrots on there and things like that. People who own parrots are crazy people. They like to share that kind of information with other people. You might be a cat person or a snake person. I met a very interesting lady in Canada recently whose very much into reptiles, snakes and stuff. There is a lot of interesting people out there.

Everybody is so hung up on diet when it comes to SIBO and Candida and IBS. It’s diet, diet, diet. There’s a very interesting Candida website I recently looked at and there was no mention of lifestyle. It was all about eat this food, eat that brand of food. It’s interesting how people become so fixated on diet. I had a recent patient from the States who said, “I can’t understand why I’m not getting better. I got the best possible diet and I exercise every day.” In fact, she looked very healthy, but her whole focus was on eating the right kind of food and going to the gym twice per day and she thought that was going to make her better.

Many people tend to walk around with these blinkers on when they’re really focused on food. I think the media plays a big role in that, too, to help us focus. We’ve got all these cooking shows with these eliminations of cutting people out who didn’t puree some whale’s egg properly and put it on top of some stupid thing. People crying because they can’t cook omelets properly on these shows. So many cooking show on TV today. So much interest in what chefs do. So much interest in looking at different kinds of foods today. At a health show that was in Anaheim recently, thousands of stands with all sorts of new kinds of cookies, breads, crackers made from quinoa, all sorts of interesting stuff. There’s no doubt about it. We’ve got a lot of scope for good food today, but there’s too much emphasis placed on food.

Now we’re going to have a look at a couple of reasons why diet is not sufficient for working on SIBO properly. Let’s have a look at one important factor is your overall health and wellbeing. It is true that food is medicine and medicine is food. It is true that food is a cornerstone or foundation or a pillar of good health, but it’s only one pillar. There are several other pillars that you need to think about. A very important other pillar in my mind is emotional well-being. There are a lot of people that are pissed off out there that live their life with anxiety, with stress. Lots of patients I see have fears and anxieties. This is going to affect the gut quite profoundly. There could be many reasons why you have these fears and anxieties. Lots of people with bad digestive disturbances have anxiety and we know that the gut will affect the mind and the mind affect the gut. Some of these patients I see have been trying to treat the gut along with anxiety medications from the doctor for many years and they get no result. In these cases, we clearly need to look at a lot more than just diet. There are a lot of unhappy people out there in the world today for many different reasons. If you’re not happy, your digestive system can never be happy. That’s one thing I want you to think about is the emotional health and well-being.

Number two and three really go together. Stress and sleep. I’ve really called them separate points because we’re living in an age where many people just don’t get enough sleep and don’t get good quality sleep. When I started practicing, it would have been about one in five people had a sleeping issue. Now, it’s more like 60 percent of people. It’s over half of people I see now that don’t sleep properly anymore. They’ve got disturbed sleep. A lot of people wake up early in the morning. Many people can’t get to sleep promptly at night because their mind is taking over. Many people get to bed too late. Many people have used technology in bed. Now, we’ve got all these ridiculous wearable technologies. These phones and things like that. Next thing, we’ll have electronic underwear to wear to bed. Look at the way it’s going. We’ve got iPads in bed. We’ve got iPhones in bed. We’ll have iUnderwear in bed. It’s ridiculous.

They’re talking about these glasses now that you can look through with displays on them and things like that. TVs will be gone in the future. You’ll be watching all your movies in your glasses in your bed. It’s getting to be ridiculous, this technology. A really good point I like to make is we’re stressing ourselves out with technology. Technology was supposed to help us. But in fact, it’s making us more sick. It’s making us less effective as people in many different ways. I really believe that. A sensible and intelligent use of technology is important.

Stress in my mind is one of the number one reasons why many people maintain gut problems for a long time and don’t get rid of it. They try to eat food, but they try to look at their lifestyle. They don’t look at their personal and professional relationships. Many people I see are unhappy with their jobs. Unhappy with their partner. Unhappy with their kids. Unhappy with their in-laws. There’s some degree of unhappiness causing them stress. The worst stresses tend to be the emotional stresses, the psychological stresses. Stresses often also come from not earning enough money, unmet expectations. There are many issues that cause stress.

Stress also comes in many different shapes and sizes. We can have stress caused by mercury amalgam fillings. We can have geopathic stress. We can have nutritional deficiency stress. We can have stress from drinking too much alcohol because our liver is under stress. We can have stress from air pollution. I was in Los Angeles a few weeks ago and I couldn’t believe how toxic the air was over there. You fly in there and you’ve got this big brown band on the horizon. There is nearly four million people in that city. If you live in a bid city, you’re going to be under quite a bit of stress. Stress comes packaged in many different shapes and sizes. Stress is not necessarily somebody behind you in a car beeping their horn. Stress can be a lot of different things. That will have a profound effect on your digestive system. You can see some of my other videos explaining the link between stress and the gut. There’s a huge link there.

Sleep we’ve talked about. I believe technology is the big part of sleeping problems today. Try to do the right thing and get to bed on time and not stay up too late.

Chemicals will be the fourth point. Many people contain or harbor many different types of chemicals in their body. Tens of thousands of different chemicals are in the environment. Every year, thousands of new chemicals get released into the market and many of them have never even been adequately tested on women and children. These make their way into the food chain, into the water chain. It’s been said that even the drinking water in a lot of cities now contain oral contraceptive pills and up to 10 to 15 different types of mental health pills are in the water, anxiety pills, anti-depressant pills, a lot of these chemicals cannot be filtered out. Where do they go? They go into your body. It’s incredible. As the population of the world increases, so does the chemical density in our bodies. Places a lot of stress on our organs. Regular cleansing and detoxification is going to help you get on top of your health problems because it will allow your immune system to work more effectively. A good cleansing regime is paramount if you want to really shake off SIBO or any kind of gut problem.

The last one really is similar as the chemicals. It’s medications. We’re an overmedicated society. Many people take far too many medicines. I was at a neighbor’s house yesterday saying goodbye because we have a neighbor moving out. I met another gentleman there, an 86-year-old man in wonderful health. I said to him, “Ari, what is the secret to living to 86 and being as healthy and happy as you are?” He said to me, “Two things. Happy wife. Number two, relaxation.” He said, “I don’t take any medication. I’ve never taken any pills.” I said, “How can you be 86 and not take medications? Everyone takes medications beyond 70.” He said, “I’ve got a quiet place in the yard where I sit and I completely relax. The art of relaxation in my mind is the number one for health.” This is a very wise man. He’s worked it out. There’s no point worrying about things. We’re all going to die anyway. We might as well just relax and take our time doing things.

If we do relax, we’ll find we don’t really get stressed out a lot about things. Also, we’ll find we don’t need a lot of medications for blood pressure or being overweight because we’re stuffing our mouths with food because we’re unhappy. Eighty-six million Americans are prediabetic. Twenty-nine million Americans have got diabetes. This is 140 million people. A lot of unhappy people in America and in Europe and in many countries around the world. Type II diabetes is a disease of lifestyle. You’re too big. You’re too overweight. There are many reasons why people gain this kind of weight. In my dad’s case, he was unhappy. He was depressed. He’d had multiple marriages that failed. How did dad get happy? By having a container of ice cream for lunch every day. That’s how he got happy. That’s how a lot of people get happy. That’s why he needed medications. The medications led to death when he was 72.

I want you to think about some of these factors that we’ve spoken about. If you look at my dad’s case, he wasn’t a happy guy so he didn’t have the emotional health there. He ate the wrong kind of foods, carbohydrates. He gained a massive amount of weight that led to about half a dozen medication, which eventually killed him.

Those points are things I’d like you consider instead of just diet when it comes to SIBO. Diet does play a role in SIBO. You’d be crazy to eat ice cream every day. But also you’d be also crazy and foolish to believe that if you ate a perfect diet that the SIBO would go away because it’s not going to happen. You’ve got to look at a lot more than just what you eat if you’re going to get well.

Using Tea Tree Oil for Candida Treatment

Greetings. New Zealand naturopath, Eric Bakker again. Author of Candida Crusher and formulator of the Canxida range of supplements. Thank you as usual for checking out my video. I really appreciate you checking out my video. Today, we’re going to talk about tea tree oil. In particular, Australian tea tree oil.

Australian tea tree oil has been around for a long, long time. In fact, the Australian aborigines, the indigenous population of Australia have been living in their continent for about 60,000 years, so a long time some particular tribes migrated from Asia down, Gondwanaland where all the continents were still formed as one big land mass and they drifted apart. The aborigines basically started to really camp out in Australia. Naturally, they started to use all kinds of different plants, animals and different things for medicines. We believe that Australian tea tree oil is possibly been used for tens of thousands of years. The indigenous people like many people gained a lot of this wisdom, which they passed down from generation to generation.

Australian tea tree oil, melaleuca alternifolia has always been traditionally used for respiratory tract infection where they would crush the leaves and boil it in water and inhale that. They would use it on cuts, wounds and bites. Spear wounds are quite common. Also bites from animals and infections. The aborigines used this quite wisely.

In 1923, there was an Australian government chemist by the name of Arthur Penfold. Back in the 20s a very popular antiseptic to use by doctors was something called carbolic acid. What Mr. Penfold discovered when he analyzed all these different natural plants is that the melaleuca alternifolia was nine to ten times more potent as an antiseptic agent than carbolic acid was. The government became very excited and by the 1930s and 1940s, it was in widespread use throughout Australia.

All the houses contained a bottle tea tree oil. This was pre-pharmacy days, where all the chemical companies started profiting. People used it for sore feet, ulcers, blisters, infections, sunburns, and insect bites. They used it for all kinds of stuff. Gum diseases it was popular, tin ear, athletes foot, jock itch. It was the normal medicine used. In fact, it was so effective that the government basically had every soldier take a bottle of tea tree oil away to war to be used for all kinds of infections. Then, of course, when pharmaceutical companies became big, it basically just about all died off.

Then, by the 1960s, the tea tree oil industry was all wiped out. In 1976, there was a guy called Eric White. What Eric did is he wanted to revive this industry knowing how powerful this product really was. He searched around and found this particular part of northern New South Wales called Bangerwell and Swamp, particularly a swamp that he thought would be the best area for growing the ultimate Australian tea tree oil. He lobbied up to four years with a local government to try to get a crown lease on the land. Eventually, he got this lease on a Thursday. They called it Thursday Plantation. That’s where the name of the company comes from. I love this story. I really support this company and I think it’s a fantastic product. Thursday Plantation Australian tea tree oil. I may have a bottle of it laying around in my cupboard. I usually keep a bottle. I think it’s one of the most amazing of all natural medicines you can use for fungal diseases.

Research in western Australian in the 1990s showed that tea tree oil gel, particularly on tinea, was more effective than any kind of pharmaceutical to be used. Particularly with Candida. It was number one for Candida out of anything, including even Lamisil. Lamisil was a little bit more powerful for trichophyton rubrum, which is a particular fungal species we find in there with jock itch or a particular kind of foot fungus such as tinea. But when it came to Candida, it was number one. Nothing can beat tea tree oil in terms of its potency. It’s really used for external application. I’ve got no doubt you can use it internally like oregano oil, a drop at a time. I often take it myself internally, but it’s not something I recommend for the average patient to do.

Oregano oil, food grade, should be perfectly fine to do. Not quite as potent as the Australian tea tree oil, but I would say pretty good match this. We have got certain types of oregano now that we found in the Mediterranean that actually exceed the ability to kill fungi that tea tree oil. They’ve only been discovered probably in the last five years or so.

What can you use Australian tea tree oil for? Well, if you look at Chapter 5 in my Candida Crusher book, it’s a perfect thing to use for vaginal cleansing. You used to be able to get a water soluble version, but it’s very hard to get now, but you can still add a few drops to quite warm water and then let that cool a bit and use that as a douche. You can also use it on feet. You can use it for jock itch. You can use it for ear. You can use it for scalp. You can use it for nails. It’s very good for toenails. You put one drop every day on the toenail bed. It will slowly penetrate and get in around there and it will get rid of quite stubborn infections. Topically, it’s fantastic. This company, Thursday Plantation, makes soaps, shampoos, all sorts of moisturizers, so you can certainly use it on your skin. I use it for acne for people, cuts, bites, burns, stings, anything like that at all. It’s a superb product. If you do use tea tree oil, make sure you use Australian melaleuca alternifolia. It has a very characteristic smell about it. Do hunt down the Thursday Plantation. It’s quite a good one to use.

I hope that gives you a bit of an insight into Australian tea tree oil and Candida. Thanks for tuning in. Can Probiotics Alone Treat Candida?

Greetings. New Zealand naturopath, Eric Bakker. I’m the author of a book called Candida Crusher and I’m the formulator of a product range called Canxida. Thank you for tuning into my video today. I always get questions from people and particularly from my subscribers from all over the world. I have a question here from a lady in Sweden. The question is “Eric, is it possible to get rid of Candida with just probiotics?”

The difference between the possibility and the probability are quite remarkably different. Of course, it’s possible. Anything is possible, but the likelihood or the probability is quite remote. I’ll explain to you exactly why that is.

First thing I want you to understand that probiotics are bacteria. Bacteria are not necessarily bad. In fact, most of the bacteria in the body, the trillions of bacteria that we have are, in fact, very good and they’re beneficial. But like anything in life, it’s all about balance. Something I always try to teach my patients is about balance. Good, bad, ugly and somewhere in between. On top of the bacteria, our body also has to contend with many different kinds of viruses and parasites and also yeasts. Different types of fungi that can come in and on the body. On top of that, we’ve also got all sorts of poisons to deal with. There are hundreds of thousands of chemicals and toxins in our environment.

I’m straying from the point here, but we’re talking about bacteria. Anything is possible, but in my opinion, one of the most important things to recognize when you have a Candida problem is to understand it’s an imbalance and you really want to get the Candida numbers and the beneficials up at a similar kind of a time. Probiotics are very important for the body. And finally, in 2009, there was a study published in the States. I think it was the University of Pennsylvania. There was an important one from Yale in 2008 and an even more important one in 2009. The one in 2009 actually discovered that when they looked at mice and rats and rabbits and animals like this, they found a very interesting correlation between animals with good levels of beneficial bacteria in their body and poor levels. The animals with the higher levels of beneficial bacteria certainly had a much stronger immune profile. That’s the whole crux of the research today with probiotics is about immunity. We know that people with good levels of lactobacillus and bifida bacteria and many other kinds of bugs that we have in our system that we normally have got there. When we’ve got them in high amounts, we’ve got a very defense force there.

But the problem with human beings is we eat foods containing antibiotics. We go into high stress. We take antibiotics as pharmaceutical medications and particularly we suffer from stress, which reduces our immunity. Of course, the imbalance becomes quite evident and slowly but surely the Candida species build up. And all of a sudden, one round of antibiotics come in there and boom, we get a huge yeast infection. In those situations, when you certainly know you’ve got Candida, it makes a lot more sense to take an antifungal medication for a period of time to reduce the numbers. Note I didn’t say pharmaceutical antifungal. Because when you start taking those again, you’re very specific for the yeasts alone and that’s going to create more imbalances in the body. I believe broad spectrum effect products tend to be more effective. When used carefully and judiciously for a period of time, you’re going to eradicate these Candida infections. But not just the Candida infection, but also the bacterial and the parasite infections.

When you take a product to clean up the gut, make sure that it’s also going to target parasites, yeasts, and bad bacteria. Sure, some of the good bacteria will be affected, but you’re not going to wipe out the good bacteria like an antibiotic will do. When you take a probiotic, it’s also important to take an enzyme at the same time. Research in the last five years has validated that when people take enzymes and probiotics simultaneously, they have a much better effect. There is a lot of complicated reasons behind it. But I think one of the important reasons is because the enzymes kick starts the gut and they improve the acid/alkaline ratio of the stomach and the small intestine. They also create a more favorable environment for the beneficial bacteria to grow. They create a hostile environment for the dysbiotic bacteria and the fungi to grow. They annoy the bad stuff and they encourage the good stuff. Enzymes are a very smart thing to take along with probiotics. That’s part of the reason why I’ve created my Canxida Restore product with the seven enzymes and the six probiotics carefully formulated to match the anti-fungal product called Canxida Remove. Those two things as a tandem work very well together.

Probiotics have a very interesting effect on the immune system. The 2009 study also actually validated the fact that they are actually very beneficial to take on a daily basis. When big universities like Yale publish findings and actually validate a dietary supplement, you know that there is certainly some truth in the matter. A long, long time ago multivitamins where actually discredited by the medical profession. I can remember when I first started practicing and the doctors would say, “There is no need to take a multivitamin. You get everything you need from food.” We know now that’s not true.

I think it was back in 2007 or 2006 when the top doctor in the US released a statement saying that it actually made sense to take a multivitamin every day because we lack certain elements in our diet. That statement one day will be released with probiotics. You watch. It will be coming out. When statements will be released it makes good sense to take a probiotic every day because it will improve your immune function.

What’s happening. I’m not going to argue for or against global warming, but what I can see is people’s immune systems are declining. As climatic effects occur and we get increasing overpopulation, we’re getting increasing stress on the population. We’re getting more limited resources for food, for fresh air and clean water. All these things are going to be coming up in the future. Whether you like it or not, things like probiotics will be a natural part of what we take in every day. Because probiotics basically keep us alive. We need beneficial bacteria to perform multiple tasks. But when we get the bad bugs, it’s stepping over the line. Probiotics are not enough to get rid of a yeast infection. It’s important to remember that you need to take something to counter that.

I probably give the analogy of the probiotics to me are like the NATO people. You know these guys that walk around with those blue helmets on like peacekeepers. When the NATO forces are around in a lot of countries, the bad guys don’t tend to jump on top of people. “Ah, oh. We’ve got some NATO people here. We better be careful.” These are the peacekeepers. Beneficial bacteria are like that. When they mingle amongst good and bad people, the bad people tend to back off.

Anti-fungal/anti-parasite approach to me is like what I call a “smart bomb.” Antibiotics are the nuclear weapon. We just dropped the bomb and we wipe everything out. We don’t do that anymore in warfare. We don’t just drop bombs and just kill billions of people. The days of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are long gone. Now, we use smart bombs. This video is made in 2016. I hope this video is around long enough for someone to watch it and say, “That guy was right.” One day antibiotics will never be used because they will be considered the nuclear weapon of the gut. If this video is still around in 40 or 50 years, someone will watch it and say, “That guy was ahead of his time.” I’m not because a lot of people are realizing now how dangerous antibiotics are. Smart bombs where they can actually fire missiles from planes and laser guide them into a shaft and actually blow up one particular room.

That’s how I find a natural product. I find it’s more targeted and it has lower collateral damage. When you’re taking a natural anti-fungal, you’re not going to blow up everything and destroy everything. You’re going to target certain types of things in the body. And also, you’re not going to have this resistance issue that you’ve got with antibiotics where you get resistance. This is why the Taliban and a lot of these guys they dug out in the hills and why we couldn’t get Osama bin Laden. We started dropping bombs everywhere. These guys get smarter. It’s like drug resistance. They started digging in. They put up stronger shields and better barriers. It took years to get a hold of Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden because they became drug resistant or bomb resistant.

This is something we don’t find with natural medicines. We can give people a good quality grapefruit seed extract. We can put some garlic in there or oregano in there. We can put many different quality herbal medicines in there. History has shown we don’t get that kind of resistance. To cut a long story short, if we’re going to use a quality anti-fungal/antibacterial and a probiotic together, we’re going to get more bang for your buck. You’re going to get a quicker result in a shorter period of time with the lease cost to you.

This isn’t a video about selling my products. You can check out my Canxida range if you want, but I want to encourage you. If you’re going to consider taking a probiotic and you’ve got a Candida problem, consider taking an anti-fungal/antibacterial at the same time. Thanks for tuning in.
